Dorian Gray - no.1

Penguin Classics 2003

From: The Guernsey Press, St. Peter Port

For: £3.99

Look: I like the soft floppiness of this one. It's a nice one to cuddle up with and just read. It's pretty battered too. I never approved of this cover, right from the start. Attempting to show Dorian is...just plain wrong, and I dislike this particular portrait especially.

Extras: Robert Mighall is the guy to congratulate, if for nothing else than putting a spoiler warning before the intro to warn first time readers. The balance between discussing the author and discussing the plot is just about right, and there are one or two interesting things in there. The notes are about as comprehensive as could be wished. The first appendix brilliantly contains some of the original reviews of the book. One claims that the book has not only given a glimpse of hell, but "taken them across its threshold and filled their lungs with its fumes." My favourite has to be the Scot's Observer - "Why go grubbing in muck heaps?". The second appendix contain's Peter Ackroyd's original dull introduction.

History: It wasn't mine to begin with...it belonged to my mother, but she got so sick of moving it out of my room that it's kinda mine now.
